Well bless you for being able to do it without drugs. I’m a wuss and had no desire to show my “womanhood” Isadora turned sideways sometime during labor, so I had to have a C-section. Would have had to had a Epidural no matter what I wanted. My doctor said she was a 7 pound baby and I have 6 pound hips.

There is so such thing as “Bad Hypnobirther”. There’s a reason it’s called Labor and Delivery…and each labor is different. You can try ahead of time to put all kinds of systems in place to manage it, deal with it, or put it in this nice square little box. However, when it hits and you have to go thru it – it’s a whole new ballgame. I think you did fabulous! Also, there are plenty of babies who score 9/10 on apgars when Mom’s have had some help via medication. As an PB/GYN once told me “You don’t get a gold star, and they don’t announce your name over the loudspeaker for going without”.

You know I’ve had 3 kids, the first without pain management and the second/third with – and I can tell you that I was more aware, more involved and actually able to enjoy the process the last two times.

You asked for advice – I have a couple of offerings.

1- (and you are already doing it) Ask for help when you need it. (And you’ll need it a lot.) The first few months can be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Let others give you a hand – watching the baby so that you can take a nap, doing your dishes or laundry for you, running errands. Whatever. Take any help you can get. If none is offered, ask.

2- Mary Ann Daly gave us a great book, “The Happiest Baby on the Block”. It’s not necessary to read the whole thing, just learn what the 4 S’s are and do them.

Back to your previous post about names – you were looking for something “scientific”. I took that to mean as in a famous female scientist and not something like “Ulna”. The one that popped into my head right away was Marie (as in Curie). A quick Google search of famous female scientists produced several lists. A very touching entry. I got misty-eyed reading it. The shore tribute to your dad was great. I was so glad we got to see you & Josh filled with such ecstatic anticipation for your daughter. I did not know about the getting stupid thing before my pregnancy. It really does happen! My ability to process information slowed dramatically. Chris would tell me something and a couple of minutes after he finished I’d finally comprehend what he had said. WEIRD!

So nice to see an update! I’m so sorry about your dad, but I’m glad that you can focus on your new little one. Hint–the 1st movements feel just like gas bubbles. Hard to tell if it’s your baby or that burrito you ate.
